Kevin Sweet's June Gardening Blog

Welcome to My June Blog

I would like to start by saying thank-you, to all the wonderful guests who joined my team and I at our annual Hanging Basket Workshop & Afternoon Tea event on Wednesday 23rd May. The event sold out months ago, and those who attended are already planning their return for our Christmas Decoration Workshop & Afternoon Tea on Thursday 22nd November! (This event is over half full already, if you are interested please do book soon to avoid disappointment.)

As always it was a true delight to spend the afternoon playing with plants and chatting about gardening with fellow enthusiasts - some experienced and some novices!

With the wonderful Summer weather, we have experienced recently I would like to remind everyone to be sure you are watering your hanging baskets, pots and garden morning and evening. It's best not to do it during the day as this can cause your plants to get scorched.

Around our estate, our own hanging baskets are out and the planters-planted, all the new growth is lush and invigorating, the estate really is looking at its best!

On Sunday 10th June its our NGS Garden Open Day, from 1pm to 5pm.
Please do join us to help raise money, but also to enjoy a beautiful day on our stunning estate. We are a dog-friendly hotel, so you can bring your lovely dogs for a day exploring too!

We are looking forward to welcoming you, please feel free to ask questions while you are here.

Overall, June is a busy time for us, with jobs like the grass cutting, watering and weeding having to be done on a regular basis but it pays dividend when we see our guests enjoying their surroundings.

Plant of the Month

Bell Boy Peppers & Tumbling Toms

This year we are growing Bell Boy peppers in our glasshouse; they have a mild flavoured fruit with many culinary uses. These pepper plants grow to a height of 75cm and a spread of 30cm.

The tomatoes we are growing are Tumbling Tom (Red) which, as the name implies, is a trailing variety. They are great for hanging baskets and areas where space is limited.
The plants will spread to 120cm and produce early sweet, juicy cherry tomatoes.
Both the Bell Boy peppers and Tumbling Toms are well worth growing.

Garden Tips

1. Keep grass areas cut and edged, raise cut if grass shows signs of stress.
2. Start feeding contain plants including hanging baskets.
3. Keep containers and baskets watered, early morning or evening are best; do not let the compost dry out.
4. Keep an eye out for slugs and snails, only use an environmentally friendly treatment.
5. Sit back and enjoy your garden!

Happy Gardening
