Early Spring sunshine has filled our forecast over the past couple of weeks, bringing a burst of colour to the estate. The sunlit lawns have drawn picnickers and terrace drinkers, while our golf course has welcomed its first players of the season. In honour of National Gardening Day, we have caught up with Head Gardener, Kevin Sweet, to find out what to look out for around the estate this season!
Spring has sprung – it certainly feels like it with longer and warmer days, and the garden is starting to wake up from the winter months.
Spring bulbs are flowering, and the trees and shrubs are starting to show their leaves. Herbaceous plants are putting on new growth and filling the border space. The grass is greening up and starting to be mown. Very shortly, we will be making up our hanging baskets and planting out our summer bedding plants. We have just ten spaces left on our workshops next month; we hope to see you there!
Our very large and impressive rhododendron on the main lawns is starting to flower, and normally is at its best during May. The best spot to see the colour in its full glory is the terrace, where you can enjoy seasonal dining and specialty cocktails! The spring flowering shrubs in the Secret Garden are budding up with flowers, offering a great place to unwind and take in the calming sound of the water trickling from the water fountain. We have so many areas to explore around the gardens and estate, ideal for a picnic!
I have noticed that a number of the bird boxes we have put out over the years are now being used. We leave out bird nesting materials such as moss and straw, which go down well with our feathered friends.
The deer will be having their young over the next few months; it's lovely to see them hopping around the sunnier lawns. I have also spotted my first sighting of some butterflies and bumblebees.
Spring, for me, is the start of a new gardening year. All the work done in the colder and wetter months of the winter start showing results.
On your next visit to Ashdown Park we'd love you to explore and enjoy the grounds. Feel free to ask any garden-related questions you may have to my team, who'd be happy to help you find our favourite hidden gems!
